Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a dramatic final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres found the back of the net, ending a tightly contested match that had remained goalless throughout regulation time. The goal secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and their first since winning the tournament in South Africa in 2010.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second bookable offence deep into stoppage time at the end of the second half. Reduced to ten men, Lionel Scaloni’s side defended resolutely but eventually succumbed to Spain’s sustained pressure in extra time.

Spain controlled much of the possession and created the clearer chances throughout the encounter, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez delivered a series of outstanding saves to keep his team in contention. The Spaniards also had an earlier goal ruled out before finally breaking the deadlock through Torres.

The final also marked a symbolic generational shift in world football, with 39-year-old Lionel Messi captaining Argentina against a youthful Spanish side inspired by teenage star Lamine Yamal. Spain’s victory ended Argentina’s reign as world champions and reaffirmed La Roja’s place among football’s elite with a memorable triumph on the global stage
