The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered officers to shoot criminals or anyone carrying illegal firearms on sight, describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police explained that the IGP made no such directive during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makurdi, Benue State. According to the statement, his comments were taken out of context and wrongly presented to the public.

The police clarified that the IGP merely reminded officers that only duly authorised security personnel are permitted to carry firearms and expressed concern over the growing use of illegal weapons by criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult violence and other serious offences.

The statement further noted that the use of firearms by police officers remains governed by Force Order 237, which clearly outlines the circumstances under which an officer may lawfully use a firearm. The IGP, it said, emphasised that officers must always act within the law and adhere strictly to established rules on the use of force.

The Nigeria Police Force urged the public and media organisations to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that misinformation on security matters could create unnecessary panic and erode public confidence in law enforcement. The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while carrying out its duties professionally, lawfully and with respect for human rights.
