MTN, Airtel, Glo Battle for Subscribers as NCC Reports 172.9 Million Active Mobile Lines

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that Nigeria recorded 172.9 million active mobile telephone lines as of June 2026, highlighting continued competition among major telecommunications operators for subscribers in the country’s growing digital market.
According to the NCC’s latest industry statistics, MTN Nigeria maintained its position as the country’s largest mobile network operator with about 92.2 million active lines, representing more than half of the market. Airtel Nigeria followed with approximately 58.3 million subscribers, while Globacom (Glo) recorded about 13.4 million active lines. 9mobile accounted for roughly 9 million subscribers.
The data also showed continued growth in teledensity, reflecting increased access to mobile telecommunications services across the country. Industry analysts attribute the competition among operators to expanding data consumption, improved network infrastructure and aggressive customer acquisition strategies, including promotional offers and enhanced digital services.
In addition, the NCC reported sustained growth in internet subscriptions, driven by rising demand for broadband connectivity, online financial services, remote work, digital education and entertainment. Mobile broadband remains the primary means of internet access for millions of Nigerians.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to promoting healthy competition, protecting consumer interests and creating an enabling environment for investment in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. It also encouraged operators to continue improving service quality, network coverage and customer experience as competition intensifies.
