A federal lawmaker has disclosed plans to meet with colleagues to consider discussions surrounding the possible impeachment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, amid growing political disagreements over the administration’s policies and actions.

The lawmaker, whose comments have stirred reactions within political circles, said discussions on the matter would involve consultations with other members of the National Assembly before any decision is reached.

He stressed that impeachment is a constitutional process and would require the necessary support and procedures prescribed by law before it could be pursued.

The statement comes amid increasing political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and some lawmakers stepping up criticism of the Tinubu administration over economic conditions, governance and other national issues.

However, a lawmaker’s statement about considering impeachment does not amount to the commencement of an impeachment process. Under Nigeria’s Constitution, removing a sitting president requires meeting specific constitutional requirements and securing the required majority in the National Assembly.

The development is expected to generate further political debate, particularly over whether there is sufficient support within the National Assembly for such a move.

Neither the Presidency nor the leadership of the National Assembly has indicated that an impeachment process against President Tinubu has formally commenced.
