The convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, was reportedly blocked by suspected political thugs during his visit to Benue State on Tuesday.

The incident occurred as Obi was travelling to Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area as part of a visit to the community, which was affected by a deadly attack in June.

Reports said some youths barricaded the route and prevented Obi’s convoy from gaining access to the area, leading to a tense situation.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that youths blocked the convoy and said an investigation had been launched to determine what happened and identify those responsible.

Obi subsequently reacted to the incident, condemning the action and warning against the use of violence or intimidation in political activities. He said political differences should not be allowed to threaten Nigeria’s democracy or peaceful engagement.

The Benue State Government, however, denied involvement in the incident. Government officials said they were not aware of Obi’s visit beforehand and therefore could not have made the necessary security arrangements for his movement.

The government also rejected allegations that Governor Hyacinth Alia sponsored individuals to block Obi, describing such claims as unfounded.

The incident has generated reactions from political figures, with calls for restraint and proper investigation as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.

Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the blockade and determine whether anyone should face prosecution.
