Royal Drummers Flock to Ladoja’s Bodija Residence After Olubadan’s Demise

By Erewunmi Peace

In a deeply symbolic move reflecting centuries‑old tradition, royal drummers have relocated from the Ibadan palace to the Bodija residence of Oba Rashidi “Rasheed” Adewolu Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan, following the confirmed death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

The relocation of the palace drummers serves as both a public announcement and a ceremonial gesture signifying that Oba Ladoja is next in line to ascend the throne, following Ibadan’s formal rotational succession system.

Key Facts:

Who passed away: Oba Owolabi Ige Olakulehin, who ascended the Olubadan throne in July 2024 at the age of 89, died early Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after his 90th birthday.

Next in line: Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (born Sept 25, 1944) currently holds the position of Otun Olubadan — the highest ranking chief in the civil line — placing him at the top of the succession list by Ibadan tradition.

Ladoja’s background: A seasoned leader, he served as Governor of Oyo State (2003–2006), later reinstated in 2006, and in 2024 took up the ceremonial beaded crown to comply with the revised chieftaincy law.

Succession timeline: The Olubadan-in-Council must formally confirm Ladoja, followed by approval from the Oyo State government. A coronation ceremony is expected to follow.

Significance

Ibadan’s chieftaincy system, which alternates between the civil (Egbe Agba) and military (Balogun) lines, has helped minimize succession disputes for over 170 years. The relocation of drummers is not just traditional flair but a clear announcement to the public and kingmakers that a new monarch is expected to soon occupy the Vy throne.

With Ladoja’s political acumen and respected status, his installation is widely anticipated to ensure continued stability and cultural continuity in Ibadanland.

Next Steps

  1. Confirmation by Council – Senior chiefs in the Olubadan-in-Council will formally endorse his appointment.
  2. State Approval – Governor Seyi Makinde will receive the Council’s recommendation.
  3. Coronation Ceremony – A formal installation event will be scheduled afterward, marking the start of a new Olubadan reign.

Ibadan residents are already reacting to the transition, heralding what many expect to be a dignified and widely supported change in leadership.
