Gbenga Daniel Mobilizes for Tinubu’s Second Term Amidst Internal Party Tussle

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Ogun State Governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, is actively mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, an effort that is taking place against the backdrop of a significant political rift within the state’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Daniel has publicly declared his support for President Tinubu’s second term, describing it as “sacrosanct.” His campaign is being channeled through his grassroots organization, the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Grassroots Movement. This group has been actively engaging in mobilization and sensitization campaigns across Ogun State, aimed at rallying support for the president’s political future. The activities include various empowerment programs and community outreach initiatives designed to solidify grassroots support.

Daniel’s robust campaign for President Tinubu’s re-election comes amid an ongoing and public political conflict with the incumbent Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun. The rivalry has resulted in Daniel’s recent suspension from the Ogun State chapter of the APC on allegations of “anti-party activities.” This internal discord highlights the complex political dynamics at play, where support for the national party leader coexists with significant factionalism at the state level.

Following his suspension, speculation arose that Senator Daniel was planning to defect to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, Daniel has vehemently denied these rumors, firmly stating his commitment to the APC and his loyalty to the national leadership. His public reaffirmation of his political stance underscores his determination to remain within the ruling party while navigating the complexities of his political rivalry within the state.
