Powerful Northern Senator Dumps PDP, Declares Next Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Erewunmi Peace

In a major political shake-up ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development, confirmed on Monday, has sent ripples through Nigeria’s northern political landscape, as Senator Samaila is considered one of the most influential lawmakers from the region.

In his statement obtained by reporters, Senator Samaila said his decision was driven by the “deep internal crisis and leadership instability” that have plagued the PDP in recent months.

“After due consultation with my supporters, political allies, and leaders across Bauchi North, I have decided to join the All Progressives Congress to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria,” he declared.

The senator also commended President Tinubu’s reform policies and Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s leadership, saying they have “restored focus, stability, and purpose to national governance.”

Sources within the APC in Bauchi have welcomed the senator’s defection, describing it as “a boost for the party’s strength in the North-East” ahead of 2027.

However, PDP insiders have expressed disappointment, accusing the senator of abandoning the party at a critical time.
A senior PDP official in Bauchi, who spoke anonymously, said the party would soon issue a formal statement addressing his exit.

Political observers believe Senator Samaila’s move could trigger a wave of defections in the coming months as politicians reposition themselves for the next general elections.

With his switch to the ruling party, the APC now controls a majority of the Senate seats from the North-East, strengthening its hold ahead of the polls.
