FG Issues Flood Alert for Osun, Ekiti States

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government, through the National Flood Early Warning Centre (NFEWC) under the Ministry of Environment, has issued a flood alert for Osun and Ekiti states following forecasts of heavy rainfall across the region.

The alert, issued on Monday, warns residents in areas such as Ilesa in Osun State, and Ado-Ekiti and Ijero-Ekiti in Ekiti State, to exercise caution and prepare for potential flooding. The advisory covers the period October 19 to October 23, 2025, and is aimed at mitigating damage and ensuring public safety.

According to the NFEWC, the heavy rains are part of seasonal weather patterns and could result in overflowing rivers, erosion, and localized flooding, especially in low-lying communities. The agency urged residents to avoid building near waterways, monitor water levels, and adhere to local authorities’ guidance.

“Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant, avoid risky areas, and prepare emergency kits. Flooding can occur rapidly, and early precautions can save lives,” the Ministry of Environment stated.

The Federal Government’s alert comes amid ongoing concerns over flood management and erosion control in Nigeria, particularly in the southern and southwestern states. While the alert does not confirm active flooding, it serves as a preventive warning to reduce casualties and property damage.

Authorities have also urged local governments, community leaders, and emergency response teams to be on standby and to mobilize resources for any potential incidents.
